Isn’t that baby cute (not)

Just so’s you know … this blog wasn’t my idea. It was given to me because James and Dan think I’d more likely “get away with it”. Cowards!

Apparently, it all started with two doting parents and their 2-year-old. I’m told she was cute (in a ‘wander round the room smiling at people’ way), but was also ugly. As neither parent was particularly unattractive, why was their toddler?

My Gran was always saying so-and-so’s boy looked more like the milkman than it’s dad. But that doesn’t work now … how many people do you know get their milk delivered (except with all the rest of the shopping from Tesco)?

Having been given this idea, I got to thinking. Do the parents of ugly babies notice? Maybe they’re genetically programmed not to notice. Ugly babies don’t always make ugly kids. Maybe it’s just a phase some of them go through.

If you stop to think, it’s a wonder all babies aren’t ugly. Just imagine what you’d look like after lying in a warm bath for 9 months, with just a snorkel showing above the surface. You’d need to dive into a tub of anti-wrinkle cream afterwards.

This is a cute baby!

This is a cute baby!

I asked around … yes, people have come across ugly babies who became good-looking people. I was also told a story about a guy going into hospital to see his newest nephew – his first words were “Good God!”.

Hair makes a difference, of course. Some babies have lots (which is good), and others don’t. Come to think of it, lots of older men have their heads shaved … I wonder if it means anything?

At the end of the day, beauty is in the eye of the beholder (it is said) … but they really should have gone to SpecSavers.

Thank you for putting this out there. Sometimes babies are just ugly. It’s a fact of life. Not everything is beautiful. Sometimes something is horrid. And stinky. And stupid. Babies can be all of these things.

Thanks for the comment Jacob – it’s true!
I’m just glad I haven’t had any of my own yet. Oh god – fancy (me!) having an ugly baby, and I’m the only one who doesn’t notice!
