More on words … don’t you just love ‘em?

I can’t help it … words and language fascinate me. Not foreign languages … I was crap at French and Latin … it’s English which sings to me. Some years back, I was a regular contributor to a thread on H2G2 which discussed (with other English speakers from around the world) the nuances of British English (and all the varieties thereof). You can’t imagine the fun we had explaining the likes of “the dogs bollocks” and “dogs dinner” to some people from the US!

I really ought to go back to H2G2 and see if it’s still as vibrant. H2G2 (now ‘run’ by the BBC?) was the brain child of Douglas Adams … it was his attempt at the Hitchhikers Guide here on Planet Earth. It was quite an achievement when it was started some 15 years ago.

Back to my words.

My typing is pretty awful … I was never taught to type, so I just picked it up as I went along, one letter at a time. So, I make a fair few mistakes, and I’m thankful for spell checkers (though they don’t always fix the problem).

My latest (memorable) goof was mis-spelling a word and achieving the opposite of what I’d intended. Fortunately, adding the offending ‘s’ also made the spell checker pop into action.

I wanted “latest” … the most recent … and typed “lastest” which, though not a ‘real’ word, implied just about the opposite in my context.

What fun it can be, having fuzzy fingers!

Maybe I’ll share some of the spell-checker goof-suggestions I get, in another post.
